Guidance: Free exhibition

This exhibition celebrates Birmingham’s nursery schools, their history and legacy and contribution today.

There are two aspects to the exhibition, the timeline which traces the development of nursery schools in Birmingham from the beginning of the 20th Century to the present day and the more detailed history of the twenty seven individual schools which has been led by the deputy head teachers. Each individual school banner is different and displays the uniqueness of each school.

From the first nursery school in 1904 to the present day the nursery schools have played a leading and important part in the education of many young children in Birmingham. We thank the great philanthropists of the early 20th century like the Cadburys for the foresight to open the first nursery school in Greet in 1904 for some of the most disadvantaged children of Birmingham.

The timeline shows a great expansion of the schools in the 1940s to assist women back to work during World War 2 and further expansion in the 1970s.
It is clear from our research and from the old photographs that many of the things that we believe in today like learning outdoors, children’s health and wellbeing and working with families were also part of children’s learning right from the beginning.
Birmingham has twenty seven nursery schools, the largest number of any local authority in England, and all have been judged to be good or outstanding in their school Ofsted inspections. Their expertise has been a valuable resource for Birmingham for many years, not only in the development of early years’ education, but for the significant role they play in their local communities.
